crescent moon over Baton Rouge

The second time was when my husband and I were driving down for the Mardi Gras.  We weren't kids anymore.  There were three of them (ours) at home with a babysitter.  I was thinking front-seat thoughts, wondering if the ALLIGATOR FARM AND VOODOO MAGICK place was still in business.

The moon was just rising between the magnolia trees when I saw the shop--all run down and boarded up.  The shallow pools in the back were still full, though, rippling in the wind-light of the moon, as if the alligators were still thereAnd then the shadow closed in.  The shadow of the earth across the moon.  I told Craig, my then-husband, how we had stopped that night, when I was eight, and watched the eclipse, right with the alligators.

The same spot!  What are the chances?

Then mom saw a sign that said ALLIGATOR FARM AND VOODOO MAGICK SHOP AHEAD.  Oh, Daddy, she said--she called him "daddy" even though there was just the me--let's stop.
